Bascule at Cape Grace

Outside seating at Bascule

Myself and the boyfriend enjoyed some "It's the weekend baby!" drinks at Bascule yesterday! It's situated on the edge of the yacht marina so you can sip on your drink and day dream about the yacht you "will own one day".

Bascule is the destination for whiskey lovers. They have over 500 different whiskeys on offer. The whiskeys are from all over the world. You can become a member if you are one of the lucky few who can afford to buy an entire bottle. They store it in a private cabinet and will retrieve it for you when you pay them a visit. You also receive your own crystal tumbler with your name engraved on it, very fancy. If you have some lose coins to throw around visit their website for more information about the membership and it's privileges.

You can enjoy a whiskey tasting here. The prices for the tastings depends  how exclusive the range is (R55-R255). This is a great gift idea for a man.

I am no whiskey connoisseur so I enjoyed some wine and cocktails but I did learn some new facts
  • Whiskey is made from a grain. Every country uses a different grain. Scotland uses barley for their single malts, Canada uses rye and America uses corn, rye and barley.
  • The grain is soaked in water and yeast is added to start the fermentation process.
  • The age of whiskey is determined by the amount of years it matures in the casket, not the bottle.
  • Whiskey can be enjoyed on the rocks or with water. Adding a little bit of water can however develop the flavour.

A single shot of whiskey at Bascule will range between R25-R18000! That R18000 treat is from a 50 year old bottle. Only 500 bottles were produced.

The boyfriend enjoyed a Bains from South-Africa and a Old Pulteney from Scotland.

The cocktail I had was the "The dream Odysey"(R60). It's a vodka cocktail served with peach snaps, apple and orange juice on crushed ice. The cocktail was too watery for me and I won't order it again. Old favourites such as a mojito(R60), martini(R40) or pina colada(R40) can also be enjoyed.

The drinks

My glass of Doolhoof Cape Boar 2012, a red blend, was delicious. It's a fruity and nutty wine with a very velvety aftertaste.

We were on our way to dinner but wanted to sample something off their tapas menu so we enjoyed the bbq chicken springrolls(R40). They were nice and crisp and we appreciated how 'meaty' they were. The tapas range between R35-R80.

If the weather permits it sit outside and sip on your drink while you observe beautiful Table Mountain. Inside the lounge is decorated with luxurious furniture and numerous spots where you can sit back and relax.

If Jay of Great Gatsby lived in Cape Town, this would be his spot! Go and enjoy Bascule, Old Sport!
